I started to work as free lance photojournalist in 1988. In 1989 I joined photoagency Hollandse Hoogte in Amsterdam. In 1996 Agence VU in Paris.Over the years I have been working in many African conflicts: Sierra Leone, Angola, South Africa, Mozambique and former Zaire.

Grants
1993: Grant from the city council of Amsterdam, to produce a document on the life of one Moroccan immigrant family in Amsterdam. The project lasted for one year portraying the life of the family in Amsterdam and on their holiday to Morocco.
1995: Grant from the Anna Cornelis Foundation, to produce a document on the life of one Surinamese immigrant family in Amsterdam. The project lasted for one year portraying the life of the family in Amsterdam and on their holiday to Surinam.
2001: Grant from the Foundation for the Arts, Design and Architecture to finish the river project.

Keees as a young photographer

Kees de Graaff werkte enkele jaren in een aboriginal reservaat op Groote Eylandt (Northern Territory, Australië). Waarna hij visuele communicatie studeerde op de Rijksacademie voor beeldende kunsten te Amsterdam. Tot 1992 bediende hij vele theatergroepen met zijn fotografie. Toneelgroep Amsterdam, Theater Persona, Theater van het Noorden, Theater van het Oosten, Werktheater, Baal en vele anderen. In de tachtiger jaren doceerde hij ook fotografie op de Rietveld academie en de Koninklijke academie in den Haag. In de negentiger jaren legde hij zich toe op de nieuwe media. Vanaf 2004, sinds de komst van de digitale camera heeft Kees de Graaff, in de stilte en afzondering, zijn dieptestudie in de fotografie hervat. Dit resulteerde in een overzichtstentoonstelling met de titel: The Praying Popes. (Grote Kerk te Breda, ikv. De Fotomanifestatie Breda Photo september 2005). De eigenzinnigheid van zijn werken vergrootte alleen maar zijn zelf gekozen isolement. Wat hem ertoe bracht intensiver te gaan schrijven over fotografie. Momenteel verzorgt Kees de Graaff de visuele communicatie voor diverse particulieren en kleine instellingen. Waaronder ook die van de Stichting Arts Africa. Een initiatief van prof M.L. Kolk (Theaterwetenschappen, Universiteit van Amsterdam). Een organisatie welk zich bezighoud met culturele uitwisseling tussen Nederland en Sudan.
